I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 2002 with a BA in journalism. I was a reporter for the Sierra Sun in Truckee, Calif., out of college. I worked for a political consultant in Reno for a few years, doing mostly graphic work for local politicians. Other than flirting with freelance writing and even editing a few books, I had left media work. I now live in southern Arizona. I’ve lived all over the American West and I still say Reno is my home although I haven’t lived there since 2011. I have an affinity for mountains, specifically the Sierra Nevada, the Tetons (I was born in Wyoming), and more recently, the Chiricahuas. I’ve loved the craft of writing and the outdoors since I was a teenager; spending time on Boy Scout backpacking and camping trips, filling up my soul and imagination. I eventually moved onto mountain climbing and snowboarding. I did earn a couple shiny awards at one point as as reporter:

Nevada Press Association 2003 Better Newspaper Contest Class III (Weeklies):

  • Best Feature Sports Story, First Place
  • Best Local Sports Column, Second Place
  • Best Local Sports Story, Third Place
  • Best Local Sports Feature, Honorable Mention

And then as a journalism student:

Society of Professional Journalists Region IX Mark of Excellence 2001: Newspaper Feature Writing, Second Place
